THANK YOU for all those who came out to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of State Belt Railroad 0-6-0 #4! Donations received will help move our project ahead with Cab Painting and Tender rust removal being the next focus.
San Francisco's historic and only surviving steam locomotive and some of the cars it pulled through the streets, faced an uncertain future when federal government evicted the railroad museum from Hunter's Point Naval shipyard. Locomotive #4 has seen ten years of restoration efforts, thousands of volunteer hours and over $50,000 in contributions spent on making the engine run again. In 2009 the engine was moved to the site of the former Southern Pacific Railroad's Bayshore yard in neighboring Brisbane.
From the inception as a fund raising group focused solely on repairing a locomotive, we realized that only standing brick roundhouse in California was in need of saving. On the border of Brisbane, Daly City and San Francisco, the early 1900's engine house has the potential of being at the center of a greater community driven development. Recently, we nominated the roundhouse to the National Park service for listing as a registered historical place, and on March 26th, 2010, it received the designation, the first building in Brisbane, California to receive such an honor.
The return of steam locomotive repair to the site and preservation of the Roundhouse has attracted new volunteers and community attention. Join us in finishing the repair of the State Belt #4 and Bayshore Roundhouse so that people will be able to enjoy significant artifacts of railroad history.
