Santa Fe Railroad in San Francisco

in progress: Santa Fe trains brought freight to and from San Francisco on barges from the East Bay city of Richmond. The dock at ferry Point in Richmond was established in 1900, both passenger ferries and barges departing from the same pier. Their passenger trains started from Richmond in to Oakland in 1904 in gasoline powered railcars. A railcar wharf was also built in Oakland on Alice Street. After the bay Bridge was built busses would run from the Santa Fe rail station in Emeryville to 44 4th Street San Francisco. On special occasions you could see a Super Chief on display at the Embarcadero The freight barges carried railcars thru the dock at China Basin, an operation abandoned in 1984. The former Santa Fe yard is gone, now the eastern edge of the UCSF Center at Mission Bay.
